The reason that most diets don’t work is that they’re seen as short-term goal-setting quick fixes. As most people know but don’t necessarily practice, permanent weight loss results from lifestyle changes. While many weight loss tip lists have emphasized what to eat, weight loss advice often ignores another important dimension of lifestyle change–how to eat.
There are two healthy attitudes to take toward food. For one, food is nourishing and life sustaining. We eat so that we can function optimally, both physically and mentally. We eat to survive.
Another attitude toward food that, in our world of instant gratification, is oddly missing is pleasure. We eat because it makes us feel good. Note, however, that the pleasure inherent in eating is not the same thing as gorging on desserts and fast food or eating compulsively. If anything, these eating habits are against a pleasurable eating experience. Pleasure means thinking about what you eat.
Thinking before you eat means carefully selecting the foods you are about to consume. While nutritional content is good for you, nutritious food also tastes better. That’s right. Fresh produce tickles your tastes buds more precisely because it’s so fresh. Junk food may “taste” good in large quantities, but these flavors are one dimensional and trivial.
Thinking while you eat means eating slowly Place each forkful into your mouth, savor the flavor, chew, and think. What are the different flavors you are experiencing? How does that make you feel? Swallow each bite and enjoy the sensuous experience of food traveling down your throat and into your stomach.
Thinking after you finish a meal is all about sitting back and relaxing. Rejoice in the fact that you nourished your body, mind, and soul. It’s that simple. If you slow down the eating process you’d be surprised at how much more satisfied you’ll feel. Losing weight doesn’t mean depriving yourself of pleasure. In fact, it may just mean the opposite.

Most people don’t enjoy their food. They eat socially, emotionally or just to have something to do. If more people actually engaged in “thoughful eating,” weight loss would be a cinch.
