Stress Less and Laugh More

Stress Less

Stress is what you feel when you are unable to completely handle a particular situation, emotion, event, pain, or circumstance.  It is a normal part of life.  However, too much stress prevents weight loss.

Stress causes many of us to overeat.  Stress also causes hormonal changes in your body that make it difficult to lose weight.  Stress can make you physically ill or weak, preventing you from working out or participating in activities.  Stress sucks.

Stress can be caused by situations we can control (e.g. too much work) or by situations we cannot control (e.g. death and divorce).  You should strategize and plan away the controllable stresses.

  • You can get more organized and prioritize your activities.
  • You can ask for help.
  • You can take more personal time to relax and enjoy life.
  • You can delegate or outsource some of your work.

However, you should get professional help from a health care provider for uncontrollable stresses.  They will provide you with strategies to cope with or eliminate these stresses.  Eliminate your stresses earlier, rather than later.

Laugh More

Smiling and laughing are great stress relievers.  Laughing has positive effects on the mind.  Laughing can also eases the physical symptoms of stress.

Smiles are contagious.  They will make you and everyone around you feel better.  Even if you feel terrible, force yourself to smile.  After a few minutes you will feel better

Most importantly, laughing or smiling can make an unbearable situation, bearable.  It is hard to be upset, frustrated, sad or unpleasant while laughing or smiling.  Laughs and smiles will make your day a little brighter and your load a little lighter.

Stress can and will hinder your weight loss, so laugh the stresses away.

  • Watch funny sitcoms and movies.
  • Read funny books and comic strips.
  • Laugh at yourself and all the stupid and silly things you do.
  • Laugh with others and not at them.  You do not want to lose weight at someone else’s expense.
