Setbacks Are Hurdles Not Failures

by Dr. Kal

This is an excerpt of my Free Weight Loss Plan, the Don’t Go Broke Weight Loss Plan.

Many of you have started weight loss programs thinking you were going to be perfect.  You promised yourself that you were going to follow the plan without any mishaps.  It never happens that way.

I guarantee that on The Don’t Go Broke Weight Loss Plan or any other plan, you will have lapses.  There will be days when you eat too many calories and exercise too little.  There will be days when you do things that you should not do, and days you do not do things that you should.

You are a human being and not a robot, so you will have setbacks.  You have had setbacks before, so expect them to occur again.  However, you must change the way you think about the setbacks.

Learning From Weight Gain

You must think about the setbacks as learning opportunities not failures.  Failure only occurs when you give up.  You are not going to give up.  You are going to learn from the lapses and develop strategies to prevent them from happening again.

You must expect setbacks, but you should not accept them.  You cannot prevent all lapses, but you can prevent some.  The best lessons in life occur after mistakes.

Do not punish yourself for a lapse.  Do not try to eat less or work out more to recover after a lapse.  Do not get depressed or sad after a lapse.  Lapses are normal.  I have had and will have many lapses.  You will also.

If you fall off of your bike, dust your clothes off and get right back on it.  Then remember what caused you to fall, so you will not fall for the same reason again.

Weight loss success is the result of consistency, perseverance and persistence, not perfection or will power.

Weight Loss Is Only A Part Of Your Life

Many of you have started weight loss programs in the past, and made the program the center of your life.  Everything revolved around your new lifestyle.  This was not the correct way to go about things.

Your weight loss program should only encompass a small portion of your life.  Do not allow it to keep you from enjoying the rest of your life.  Enjoying your life and being successful in other endeavors will only help you to lose more weight.

Why You Are Trying To Lose Weight?

Many of you have started weight loss programs focused on what you were giving up and what you were losing.  You thought about how great life would be if you could eat all the unhealthy foods you wanted and never exercise like your thinner friends and family members.  Do not think this way.

You are not your thinner friends or family members.  You are you.  Be happy with that, and be the best you that you can be.

Remember to think positively.  Do not think about what you are giving up.  You should think about what you are gaining by losing weight.  Think about how losing weight will change and improve your life.  Close your eyes and visualize yourself one or two years from now after you have lost all of the weight.
