The obesity epidemic has now spread to our children. Growing up I was an overweight child and an obese teen. I know the adverse effects this has had on my life. So, I am passionate about helping reverse this deadly trend. I wrote Childhood Obesity Strategies – Put Their Parents in Jail, which discusses childhood obesity.
In this article, I suggest that the parents of overweight children should be imprisoned. I argue that allowing your child to become overweight/obese is child abuse. Parent’s actions may not be malicious and they may be the cause of ignorance, but they are still abusing their children.

A very interesting article… It always angers me when I see overweight parents with obese children. Can they be blamed? To a certain extent they can, but the sad part is that they simply don’t know any better. It’s hard to blame them for something that they don’t even understand…
Whether it’s simply ignorance or down right stupidity, these people have no clue about any aspects of a healthy lifestyle. To compound the issue, it costs less to buy a fast food combo (1200 calories) than a couple heads of organic brocolli (a few hundred calories?). So what can we do?

In my opinion, it’s all about education. I would hate to think we need to punish people when they are for example, convinced they will save more money by buying cheaper unhealthy foods – when in the long run they will be more healthy and therefore save more money on health care by purchasing food that’s higher quality and slightly higher priced today. The perceived value is skewed because they can’t see what they’ll be 10 years from now, but they do know they can keep more money in their pocket now. Education about cause and effect – not punishment is what I vote for.

Whenever I see an overweight child, I usually have the urge to see how this child’s parents look like or I wonder how does this child feel about the excess weight he/she has if someone really asked about it? I once babysitted a 4-year-old boy who is really overweight, and from the looks of his mom, she’s overweight too. From the 4 hours I was observing the boy, he usually asks me for some junk food or candies or sodas. Of course, I know that he really isn’t hungry (maybe just bored) and I told him to wait for his mom to come home. When his mom came home, I got scolded a bit for not giving him what he asked! I guess an elaborate education to the bad effects of being overweight should be given to the parent and maybe if they ignore it and continue to let their child be overly obese, then I guess they deserve to be jailed.
