59 billion dollars were spent on weight loss in 2008. That is a large amount of money. Americans throw money at weight loss, but it’s not necessary to get results. Weight loss does not have to be expensive.
I learned how to lose weight inexpensively as a 330 pound medical resident, who did not have enough time or money to lose weight. Actually, I just thought I did not have enough time or money. I was working 80 hours a week, making less than 10 dollars an hour in New York City, and I had 200,000 dollars in student loans to pay back. I eventually found out that I had more than enough money to lose weight and adopt a healthy lifestyle.
I Can’t Afford to Lose Weight
Often times, when I speak to someone about weight loss, they tell me that they cannot afford to lose weight or live a healthy lifestyle. Now that I know better, I think that is ridiculous for two reasons.
The first reason is that you cannot afford to not lose weight. Treating the diseases associated with being overweight or obese will cost you more in the future than it would cost to prevent those same diseases now.
Being overweight or obese will limit the number of years you will be healthy enough to work. So, you will have to spend more money while making less.
Being overweight or obese will also limit the number of quality years you will live. You may not die earlier but the quality of your last years will be far worse than if you were at a normal weight.
The second reason is that losing weight can be very inexpensive, if you know how to do it.
