How to Develop a Yoga Practice for Home and Travel

by Guest Author

A HOW TO guest post from Nathan Joynt of Stream of Consciousness.

In my last post, I discussed how to lose weight while traveling using yoga. I described the many benefits and advantages of practicing yoga when you are away from the comforts of home.

So where should you turn to begin your yoga practice? Because yoga is a mental and physical discipline, it’s crucial not to overlook one or the other. This is why the guidance of an instructor is often so important – especially for those who are newer to the practice and need assistance with poses, practicing proper breathing techniques and learning flow movements.

Gaiam Yoga Club

The Gaiam Yoga Club is an online yoga club that gives you all of this assistance and is perfect for traveling. What makes this club so valuable for traveling purposes is the fact you get to download over 60 meditation and yoga audiocast classes directly to your mp3 player or phone. So, if you don’t have your computer handy, you’ll probably still have your player or phone and you can quickly and quietly go about your practice.

With these audiocasts you receive specific instructions about various yoga poses and movements to follow along with or to eventually create your own routine. Either way, you’re getting all the tools you need to begin your yoga practice, or take your yoga practice to the next level by customizing your own movements.

Traveling with yoga on your phone or player, there is no need for additional electricity and even if your space is limited, your travel time as well as your desire to lose weight will be in balance. If you’re new to yoga, you’ll quickly realize how much the art form can positively affect your well-being away from home.

Great post and excellent info about Gaiam Yoga Online, I didn’t know about them. I would also suggest David Swensons book on Ashtanga Yoga that lays flat on the floor for easy reference while practicing Yoga. I use it every morning with various routines from 15, 30, 45, and 90 minute sessions.

Hello Dr. Kal!

When I was younger I took an adult education yoga class. It was what I would consider ‘popular’ yoga, and I liked it very much. In those days, my goal was relaxation and stress-relief, and I found it worked very well for me.

As I got older, I gave up on it. Really, I’d never even considered yoga as something to help with my weight. You’ve inspired me to dust off the old yoga mat, download some meditations, and see if you’re as right about this as you have been in your other articles.

Thanks for the “push”!

Like the idea of a bed instead of a mat. Good idea. Since I started yoga about a year ago, noticed great results in my overall fitness. Can’t recommend it enough. Going to save this on my iphone.
